They did get off to a fast start, scoring three runs by the end of the fifth inning. If they can pull this off again today, they might be able to hold onto the lead. The good news is they have a strong starting pitcher.
Getting the start for the Diamondbacks today is Merrill Kelly, who is 8-5 this season. Kelly has an ERA of 3.36 over the span of 104.1 innings. With Kelly on the mound, the Diamondbacks definitely have a chance of winning this one.
Batting will be a struggle tonight, but they’ve found ways to put up runs before. In fact, they once beat the Colorado Rockies with a 9-run game.
San Diego Padres: Clevinger gets the nod for tonight
Sure, the San Deigo Padres are the clear-cut favorite to win this game. However, there have been some uncharacteristic losses for the Padres in the past. One of their most recent losses was a 10-6 loss to the Colorado Rockies.
In fact, the Padres were nearly swept by the Rockies and lost the series 3-1. Keep this in mind if you’re planning to bet on San Diego tonight.
Getting the start on the mound tonight is Mike Clevinger, who is 2-2. Over the course of 40.1 innings, Clevinger has an ERA of 3.79 and 40 strikeouts. Compared to Kelly, Clevinger is good competition.

The Padres have suffered some uncharacteristic losses in the past, most recently to the Rockies. We established earlier that the Diamondbacks beat the Rockies 9-2 not very long ago.
