While the Red Sox, Yankees, and Astros have dominated the MLB rankings and gotten most of the attention this season, the Oakland A's have quietly played themselves into playoff contention. Bob Melvin's team (46-39; No. 9 in Dunkel's MLB Rankings) has won 12 of its last 15 games and has done much of it without standout third baseman Matt Chapman, who has been suffering from a hand injury. The good news is that Chapman has begun his injury rehab. Another piece of good news could be the arrival of the San Diego Padres (37-49; No. 26) in town tonight for the start of an interleague series.
