2021 Memorial Tournament Betting Preview/Prop Plays

For one of golf's most prestigious non-major of the PGA Tour, the next event takes place in Dublin, Ohio, at the Muirfield Village. This course was designed by none other than Jack Nicklaus, which features some interesting play styles for some golfers. 

The field for this one is composed of 120 golfers, with top names involving Jon Rahm, Collin Morikawa, Patrick Reed, Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, and Rory McIlroy. Several of these golfers have either won here or placed well.

Betting Overview 

This course can become quite difficult for some since it has long rough patches and faster greens with the use of bentgrass. With it being a Jack Nicklaus course, you should expect some of the best golfers to succeed here.

Jon Rahm (-26.698) and Patrick Cantalay (-28.956) will be two interesting picks to watch. These two golfers won the previous two years of play here, with Rahm being last year's winner and Cantalay winning in 2019.

Golfers That Could Win 

Jordan Spieth (-20.441) is on top of many leaderboards, and for a good reason. Compared to the field, he has led in many categories (approach, driving, and putting) and makes a strong case to win this event. 

Justin Thomas (-27.990) is a bit of a wild card and somewhat of a long shot here. This is because of his inconsistency throughout this year. However, he is a very good iron player, and this could be an event to break out of his slump. 

Viktor Hovland (-24.070) has been a jack of all trades this season, and the 23-year-old is definitely someone to watch. He already has two PGA Tour events under his belt, with one coming in this year in Mexico. In addition, he has two runner-up finishes along with two third-place finishes out of his last three starts. 

Potential Winning Pick 

Collin Morikawa (-24.890) might be an interesting pick. Especially, when you look at a Jack Nicklaus designed course, they all typically have one thing in common: iron play. This course specifically will reward golfers that have the ability to make a second shot with accuracy. When looking at the players that have the best approach over the last 24 rounds, Morikawa definitely fits the bill. In addition, he also displays some of the best ball-striking and some of the best play through par four holes.  

Prop Plays

Top 10 Finish: Jordan Spieth (+163)

Spieth was kicking himself after leading last week's Charles Schwab Challenge through 54 holes only to shoot a final-round 73 and fall two shots behind winner Jason Kokrak.

Still, it continued a strong run for the 27-year-old Texan that includes eight Top 10 finishes in his last 11 events. Among those was his first victory since 2017 at the Valero Texas Open. His world ranking has jumped from 92^nd to 23^rd since January.

Rated No. 1 in the Dunkel Index, we’ll take Spieth (+163) to keep the momentum going and add another Top 10 finish to his resume.

Top 20 Finish: Charley Hoffman (+163)

Hoffman just keeps on churning out Top 20 finishes. Last week’s 3^rd place at Colonial Country Club was his 5^th straight Top 20 finish.

The 44-year-old out of UNLV has been consistently long off the tee (22^nd in driving distance) and accurate around the greens (28^th in greens in regulation percentage).

He hasn’t enjoyed much success at the Memorial in the past as he’s made the cut only once in his last 5 visits. But rated No. 5 in the Dunkel Index, we think Hoffman (+163) is worth the risk to continue his string of Top 20 finishes.

Top 30 Finish: Patton Kizzire (+200)

Like Hoffman, Kizzire hasn’t had much success at the Memorial with an average finish of 38^th in his four visits.

But he also comes in enjoying a hot stretch that has seen the 35-year-old out of Auburn finish in the Top 5 in back-to-back tournaments, including a 3^rd-place finish in last week’s Charles Schwab Challenge.

Not the longest off the tee (65^th in driving distance), Kizzire has been making up for it with on the greens where he ranks 15^th on the Tour in putting.

Rated No. 16 in the Dunkel Index, we’ll take Kizzire (+200) to break through at the Memorial with a Top 30 finish.

Top 40 Finish: Troy Merritt (+120)

After missing the cut in five of seven events, Merritt has suddenly turned a corner by making the cut in three of his last four.

And once locked in for the weekend, the 35-year-old out of Boise State has made the most of it with Top 10 finishes in each of those events, including a 7^th last week at the Colonial Country Club.

Merritt has had some success at the Memorial with a Top 20 finish in his last four trips and an average finishing position of 35^th.
