The Utah Utes suffered a major setback in October with a 30-23 loss to USC. In college hoops, the Providence Friars returned all five starters from last year's 18-win team and are expected to challenge in the Big East. But the early returns in non-conference play have not been encouraging as the Friars dropped three straight before finally beating Pepperdine, 80-77, last Sunday. Ed Cooley's team will try to generate some positive momentum tonight as the Friars (5-4) face in-state rival Rhode Island (5-3), which is coming off an 86-81 loss at West Virginia despite a season-high 32 points from junior Fatts Russell. Over in the NBA, the Minnesota Timberwolves opened a four-game road trip with a 121-114 loss at Dallas on Wednesday that saw Karl-Anthony Towns' streak of double-doubles snapped at nine straight. Towns and the Twolves (10-10) will try to bounce back tonight as they face the Oklahoma City Thunder (8-12), who are coming off a 107-100 home loss to Indiana.
