Yesterday, three of the four MLB teams facing postseason elimination were able to survive. Included in that group were the Tampa Bay Rays, who roughed up Zack Greinke for six runs on five hits in just 3 2/3 innings en route to a 10-3 win over the Houston Astros. Still down 2-1 in the ALDS, the Rays will try to avoid elimination again tonight as they host the Astros in Game 4. TB Manager Kevin Cash has announced it will be a bullpen day with Diego Castillo serving as the opener. Houston will counter with ace Justin Verlander, who held the Rays to one hit in seven innings during a 6-2 win in Game 1. First pitch is 7:07 p.m. EST at Tropicana Field. The WNBA had its own Willis Reed moment in Game 3 of the Finals when Elena Delle Donne suited up despite a herniated disc in her back. The reigning MVP proved to be the inspiration the Washington Mystics needed as they defeated the Connecticut Sun, 94-81, to take a 2-games-to-1 lead in the best of five series. The Carolina Hurricanes (3-0-0) are off to a 3-0 start for just the second time in franchise history and have managed to overcome third period deficits in each win. They'll try to keep that hot streak going tonight as they travel to Florida to face a Panthers (1-1-0) team that is coming off a 4-3 win over Tampa Bay on Saturday. Week 5 in the NFL resulted in its first coaching casualty as the Redskins parted ways with Jay Gruden after five-plus years and a 35-49-1 record. At 0-5 this season and No. 30 in the latest Dunkel NFL Index, the move is not surprising. Gruden will be replaced on an interim basis by Bill Callahan, who actually looks to have a shot at winning his first game as the Redskins travel to Miami on Sunday to face the 0-5 Dolphins. And Week 6 in college football saw Ohio State leap past idle Alabama to No. 2 in the latest Dunkel FBS Index following the Buckeyes’ 34-10 win over Michigan State. Georgia, Oklahoma, Penn State and LSU all remained the same with easy wins. Florida also moved ahead of Auburn into the No. 8 slot with their 24-13 victory over the Tigers in Gainesville.
