Despite losing to Georgia last week, Notre Dame fans felt pretty good about the Fighting Irish's effort in a 23-17 setback to the title-contending Bulldogs. It was a far cry from last year's national semifinal against Clemson or the 2013 BCS championship against Alabama, both which resulted in humiliating blowouts. But the Irish (2-1, No. 19 in Dunkel Index) can't pat themselves on the back for too long as they have to turn around this week and host the rising Virginia Cavaliers (4-0, No. 21 in Dunkel Index). The Tampa Bay Rays clinched a postseason spot last night with their 6-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. Combined with Cleveland's loss in Washington, the Rays secured a wild card spot and will return to the postseason for the first time since 2013. But there's still work to do to determine whether the Rays or Oakland A's will have home field for the one-game playoff. Both are currently tied with 96-64 records with two games remaining. Tampa Bay will take the field first this afternoon as they continue their series against the Blue Jays. Opener Ryan Yarbrough (11-5, 4.08) will get the start for the Rays, while Toronto will counter with Trent Thornton (5-9, 5.00). The first pitch is 3:07 EST at Rogers Centre.
