Things couldn't get much tighter in the NL Central where the St. Louis Cardinals (56-49) and Chicago Cubs (56-49) are in a tie for first place and are just one game ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers. It's the perfect backdrop for tonight's series opener between the Cubs and Cards at Busch Stadium. Despite dropping the final two games of their series with the Astros, the Cardinals come in having won nine of their last 12. The Cubs have scuffled of late, losing five of their last seven. St. Louis will go with veteran right-hander Adam Wainwright (7-7, 4.63) on the mound, while Chicago will counter with Yu Darvish (3-4, 4.54). The WNBA returns from its All-Star break with a potential Finals matchup between the West's Phoenix Mercury (10-8) and the East's Washington Mystics (12-6) in DC. Phoenix has done well to stay in contention without its star, Diana Taurasi, who remains sidelined with a back injury. Washington also knows the difficulty of winning without its star when Elena Della Donne missed time with a broken nose.
