Pittsburgh Penguins at Philadelphia Flyers Betting Preview
The NHL season kicks off tonight. The opening matchup taking place in Philadelphia couldn’t be a better contest.
The Pittsburgh Penguins will travel to the Wells Fargo Center to play the Philadelphia Flyers. Puck drop is scheduled for 5:30 pm ET.
The moneyline for this one has Philadelphia at -116 and Pittsburgh at -105. The over/under for the contest has been set at six goals.
The Penguins are led by Sidney Crosby, who has been the one constant in Pittsburgh for years. Crosby is ranked second amongst active players in goals scored.
Last season, he missed a lot of time due to injury, so I guarantee Crosby is ready to compete once again. When Crosby is healthy, he is one of the best centers in the NHL.
The Penguins will have an All-Star goalie in the net tonight. Tristian Jarry will try to keep the Flyers scoreless over the course of 60 minutes.
In 31 starts last season, Jarry recorded 20 victories. He recorded a .921 save percentage, which is exceptional.
2019-20 was a breakout season for the young goaltender. Expectations surrounding Jarry are very high heading into Wednesday night’s opener.
The Flyers are going to be defined by defense in 2021. The team’s goaltender, Carter Hart, is only 22 years old, but he was phenomenal last season.
Hart is an emerging superstar in the NHL, and I expect him to be one of the best goalies in the league over the next decade. Hart gave up an average of 2.42 goals per game last season in his 43 starts.
Hart was ranked second in this category for goalies with over 40 starts behind legendary keeper Tuukka Rask. In 14 postseason starts last season as a 21-year-old, Hart had two shutouts.
The Flyers will also have forwards Oskar Lindblom and Nolan Patrick back in the lineup this season. These two didn’t play much last year because of injury, but they’re expected to play big roles in 2021.
These two could make the difference for the team when it comes time for playoff hockey. Their presence will help support center Sean Couturier and provide more depth to this year’s Flyers squad.
I believe this game will be a defensive battle. The over/under has been set at six goals. I believe this total will go under. I’m predicting that the teams will combine for five goals.
The Flyers will win this matchup 3-2. The two emerging stars in the net for both teams will make scoring minimal over three periods of play.
I think Crosby is able to find the back of the net once, but Hart will settle into the game very quickly. Having Lindblom and Patrick back will give Philadelphia the necessary extra scoring opportunities to take down the Penguins.
I’m taking Philadelphia on the moneyline at -116 and under six goals.
