Minnesota Twins at St. Louis Cardinals Betting Preview
It’s Trade Deadline day in Major League Baseball, and that will be the biggest focus for a majority of teams around baseball. On the diamond Friday night, it will be the St. Louis Cardinals hosting the Minnesota Twins in a battle of teams that will likely be “sellers.”
Minnesota was supposed to be a threat to win the AL Central this season, but things fell apart early on in the year for the Twins. This team comes into Friday night with a record of 43-60, and the selling already started earlier this month for Minnesota.
St. Louis is another team that has been disappointing this season, but there is still time to make a little noise. The Cardinals come into this series with a record of 51-51, which has them 9.5 games out of first place in the NL Central.
The Minnesota Twins are the betting favorites at -124 over the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night.
Pitching a Problem For Twins
The Minnesota Twins currently have a team ERA of 5.01 this season, which is one of the worst marks in all of baseball. This could also be a pitching staff that will be losing some of its top pieces, including their scheduled starter for Friday.
Jose Berrios is set to take the mound for the Twins unless he is traded to another team before the start of the game. Berrios has gone 7-5 with a 3.48 ERA, and he would provide a challenge to the Cardinals if he started.
Minnesota has already traded Nelson Cruz, and he was the top offensive player for this team in 2021. The Twins are better than league average in most offensive categories, but this isn’t a dominant offensive team.
Cardinals Can’t Score
The Cardinals have had major issues at the plate all season long, despite adding Nolan Arenado in the offseason. Arenado could be out of the lineup for a while after being hit by a pitch, and that won’t make things any easier.
St. Louis is hitting just .233 on the season, and they also don’t hit for a ton of power. Paul Goldschmidt and Harrison Bader are starting to heat up and will be a key in this game.
Injuries have affected the Cardinals’ starting rotation, and Wade LeBlanc is set to start on Friday night. The Cardinals do have a terrific trio in the bullpen and can usually shut down any game with a lead.
Cardinals Pick Up Win
Both of these teams have been disappointing for much of the 2021 season, but the Cardinals have at least been a solid team when playing at home. The Cardinals still think they have a chance to make a run at the playoffs, and they have to take advantage of this matchup.
Minnesota can really slug, but that pitching has just been a disaster all season. This should be a game that will feature plenty of offense, and the Cardinals will be able to break out a bit against a bad pitching staff.
Bet the St. Louis Cardinals money line on Friday night as they are able to find just enough offense to pick up a series-opening win over the Minnesota Twins.
