Major League Baseball Rankings

17 May 2021

Another week has gone by in Major League Baseball, and we have reached the quarter poll of the season. The cream is rising to the top, and the divisions are seeing themselves start to straighten out a bit. We are approaching the summer months, which should help the good teams get hot and stay hot. Here is a recap of the most up-to-date Dunkel Index Major League Baseball rankings. Be sure to check out the entire listing of rankings!

Padres Get Hot

The San Diego Padres finished the weekend with a three-game sweep over the St. Louis Cardinals. St. Louis had some in hot, but San Diego cooled them down. The Padres are missing key guys and still won all three games. The sweep pushed San Diego to #4 on the most recent rankings. They trail the Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox, and divisional rival San Francisco Giants. The Cardinals fell a couple of spots and are now #9 on the rankings. Teams between the Padres and Cardinals from 5-8 include the Athletics, Astros, Blue Jays and Dodgers. If you are looking for the team to round out the Top 10: It’s the New York Yankees.

Royals Keep Free Falling

A couple of weeks ago, we were going crazy about the start Mike Matheny and his Kansas City Royals got off too. A couple of weeks later - the Royals have fallen to 4 games below .500 and have dipped down to 23rd in the most recent rankings. Kansas City is playing poor baseball and had a tough time with divisional rival Chicago over the weekend. The only teams the Royals are ahead of in the rankings are: Orioles, Angels, Rangers, Pirates, Rockies, Twins, and Detroit Tigers. The Tigers have the worst record in all of Major League Baseball at 14-26, while Minnesota is right with them at 13-25.

Pleasant Surprises

We mentioned the Toronto Blue Jays are 7th on the rankings; they are one of the best surprises so far this season. Toronto is 22-17 on the season. Many called the Indians having no chance, but they have played solid baseball. Cleveland comes in ranked 12th with a 21-17 record on the season.  Seattle is above .500 - and after 41 games - that is an upset. Look for Seattle to keep surging and move up as the season goes along. The Mariners are currently 15th on the list, just ahead of a pair of National League Central teams in Milwaukee and Cincinnati.

Disappointing Surprises

A couple of disappointing surprises so far this season are the Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs. The Braves were expected to win the National League East, but so far cannot get any traction going. The Braves are 19-21 and 18th in the rankings. For the Chicago Cubs, the big market team has got to play better baseball. The Cubs are 19-20, and one spot below Atlanta, at 19th.

Be sure to check out the full rankings from 1-30 or the Major League Baseball teams here. We are expecting another great week of action, and we will be back for another look next week following a complete week of games!
