FCS Playoff Picks

NCAA FBS Previews

In return to FCS title game, Eastern Washington becomes latest runner-up to powerhouse North Dakota State | The Seattle Times

After the postponement of last year’s season, the North Dakota State Bison will finally get a chance to defend their 2019 national crown as the FCS playoffs open up on Saturday.

The Bison (6-2) will host a familiar face in the first round as they face the Eastern Washington Eagles (5-1) at the Fargodome. The last time they faced each other was the 2018 championship in Frisco, Texas, as the Bison came away with a 38-24 win. Overall, North Dakota State leads the series, 3-1.

But this does not look to be as powerful an NDSU team as in year’s past. The Bison dropped two games in the regular season, including last week’s 27-17 home loss to South Dakota State, and could easily have lost another two. QB play has been a problem since Trey Lance opted for the NFL draft and neither Zeb Noland or Cam Miller has been able to get the offense going on a consistent basis.

Offense is not a problem for the Eagles, who finished the regular season with five straight wins following an opening week loss to Idaho. QB Eric Barriere is the favorite by many to win the Walter Payton Award and for good reason as the senior threw for 2,192 yards and 18 TDs against only 6 INTs.

The Dunkel Index projects North Dakota State as a 2-point favorite in this matchup, which is below the current line of 7. The Index also has the final score total set at 45, which is under the O/U total of 54 ½.
