Final 2016-17: Golden Moment

Kevin Durant left Oklahoma City and headed to Golden State with one thought in mind: winning an NBA championship. Durant delivered on that goal in a big way as earned Finals MVP while leading the Warriors to a 4-1 series victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Warriors came up just short in being perfect during the postseason, finishing with a 16-1 record and their only blemish being a Game 4 loss to the Cavaliers. But Durant helped squash any hopes of a Cleveland comeback by scoring 39 points in a 129-120 clincher in Game 5. Here are the final Dunkel NBA rankings for the 2016-17 season.

Final 2015-16: Record-Setting, Heart-Breaking

The Golden State Warriors set the regular season record for victories (73) and looked poised to repeat as champions after jumping out to a 3-1 series lead over the Cleveland Cavaliers in the finals. But behind playoff MVP LeBron James and Kyrie Irving, the Cavs stunned the Warriors by winning three straight, including a 93-89 victory in Game 7 on Golden State’s home floor, to clinch the franchise’s first ever championship. Here are the final Dunkel NBA rankings for the 2015-16 season.

Final 2014-15: Golden Ticket

The Golden State Warriors survived a one-man wrecking crew in LeBron James to claim their first NBA title since 1975. Down 2-1 in the series, Golden State coach Steve Kerr inserted Andre Iguodala into the starting lineup for the first time this season. Iguodala responded with stellar play on both ends of the floor in leading the Warriors to a 4-2 series win over the Cavaliers and the Finals MVP Award. The Heat, behind a magnificent postseason performance from LeBron James, survived a grueling 7-game championship series against the Spurs to claim their second title in as many years.  San Antonio looked primed to pull off the upset when it led late in Game 6, but the Heat were able to squeak by in OT and then take care of business in a 95-88 victory in Game 7.  In victory, James joined Michael Jordan as the only players to win back-to-back league MVPs and NBA Finals MVPs. LeBron James was looking for vindication in his decision to head to Miami.  Instead, it was Dirk Nowitzki who earned redemption as the veteran led Dallas to its first NBA championship in a 6-game series over the Heat.  Nowitzki earned the Finals MVP, largely for his dominating performance in crunch time, as the veteran tallied 62 fourth-quarter points — as many as James and Dwyane Wade had combined.   Here are the final rankings for the 2010-11 NBA season.

Final 2009-10: Land Of Lakers

The Lakers finally beat arch-nemesis Boston in a Game 7 (83-79) to claim its 16th NBA championship and fifth with Kobe Bryant on the team.  In a series that went back-and-forth with no team able to keep the momentum, LA overcame a 13-point deficit in the finale as the Celtics dropped a Game 7 for the first time in team history.  It also ended a strong Celtic run that saw the veteran team move up from No. 9 in the regular season rankings by knocking off the two top-rated teams (Cleveland and Orlando) in the Eastern Conference playoffs.   Here are the final rankings for the 2009-2010 season.

After facing unexpected challenges from Atlanta and Cleveland early in the playoffs, the Celtics showed why they were the No. 1 ranked team heading into the postseason as they put away both the Pistons and the Lakers in six games to claim their 17th NBA title.  Boston left little to chance in the deciding game as it dominated the Lakers (131-92) on both ends of the floor.  Paul Pierce, a holdover from last year’s 24-win team, won the series MVP, while new additions Kevin Garnett (26 points, 14 rebounds) and Ray Allen (26 points) came up big in the final.  Here are the complete Dunkel NBA ratings* for the 2007-08 season.

Final 2006-07: Spurs Claim Fourth Title

After surviving the rugged Western Conference, there was no doubt who the better team was in the finals this year as San Antonio dominated Cleveland in a four-game sweep for the Spurs’ fourth championship in nine years.  Trying to live up to the pressure of the “dynasty” tag, San Antonio used a stifling defense to shut down Cleveland’s LeBron James and got an MVP performance out of Tony Parker, who averaged 24.5 points per game on 57 percent shooting in the series.  The Spurs finish a solid No. 1 in the Index, while Cleveland finished at No. 4.   Here are the complete Dunkel ratings* for the 2006-07 season.
