LSU Beats Oklahoma To Finish No. 1

Louisiana State finished an improbable run by beating Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl and claiming the BCS championship as well as finishing first in the Dunkel Index. For the Tigers, it was their first national crown since 1958. For Oklahoma, it was a disappointing finish to what was once considered a record-breaking season. But the Sooners lost to Kansas State in the Big 12 championship and could not regain their momentum as they fell to LSU, 21-14. The Tigers' championship was not without controversy, however. Southern California, which finished No. 2 in Dunkel, was ranked No. 1 in the sportswriters' poll. The Trojans lone loss was to California early in the season, but they rolled the rest of the season finishing with a 28-14 win over Michigan in the Rose Bowl. The divided championship was the first one since 1997 when Michigan and Nebraska split the crown. Here are the final rankings for the 2003 college football season.

Delaware Captures 1-AA Title

After moving in and out of No. 1 all season, Delaware took off in the I-AA playoffs and finished well ahead of the pack in the Dunkel Index. The culmination of a 15-1 season came Friday night as the Blue Hens rolled over Colgate, 40-0. Delaware's lone blemish came back on November 8 when it lost to Northeastern, 24-14. But that was a distant memory and once the playoffs started Delaware rolled over Southern Illinois, Northern Iowa, Wofford and Colgate by the combined scores of 149-23. The Blue Hens saved the best for last, dominating Colgate from the start. They led 20-0 at the half and never let the Raiders -- who had won 21 straight coming in -- get any momentum. Delaware outgained Colgate 348 to 157 and recorded the first shutout in I-AA championship history. It was also the most lopsided final ever. Andy Hall threw two TD passes to David Boler and Germaine Bennett ran for two TDs to highlight the effort. Here's the final I-AA rankings for 2003.

Grand Valley State Wins Div. II Title

Grand Valley State made it two straight Division II titles with a 10-3 win over North Dakota on December 13.  The Lakers became just the seventh team to win back-to-back titles.  The win marked the third straight playoff game that GVSU held its opponent without a touchdown.  The Lakers clinched the game when senior linebacker Mike Hoad intercepted a pass at the GVSU five-yard-line with just 20 seconds left.  Here are Dunkel's final Division II rankings for 2003.
