Week 11: Spiders Catch Delaware In Web

It took five overtimes, but Richmond was finally able to put Delaware away (62-56) on Saturday to clinch the South Division title in the CAA.  Delaware tied the game at 38-all on the last play of regulation when QB Joe Flacco took it in from the one-yard line.  But the Blue Hens failed to win it in the third OT when Jon Striefsky missed a 22-yard FG attempt.  Richmond was finally able to win it on Josh Vaughan's 13-yard TD run.  The win keeps the Spiders at No. 5 in this week's Index, while Delaware drops to No. 6.  Here are the complete rankings through games played on November 10.

Week 9: Bison Back On Top

North Dakota State didn't stay out of the top spot for long as the Bison move back up to No. 1 in this week's Index after a 52-17 win over Southern Utah.  NDSU was led by RBs Pat Paschall and Peter Blincoe, who combined for 189 yards on the ground and four TDs in the easy victory.  Last week's No. 1, Northern Iowa, drops to No. 2 after barely holding on against Youngstown State (14-13).  The Panthers trailed 13-0 entering the fourth quarter and needed a pair of late TDs from Johnny Gray to avoid the upset.  Here are the complete rankings through games played on October 27.

Week 8: ND State Beats MN, But UNI No. 1

There was no letdown for Northern Iowa after its big win over Southern Illinois as the Panthers rolled to a 42-3 win at Western Illinois on Saturday behind Corey Lewis' 166 rushing yards and 2 TDs.  The win may not have been as sexy as North Dakota State's 27-21 win at Division IA Minnesota, but was enough to push UNI to No. 1 in this week's Index.  Tyler Roehl led the way in the Bison win with a school-record 263 rushing yards and a touchdown.  While Northern Iowa and North Dakota State continue to dominate the top of the rankings, there was a shakeup in the Top Five as both Appalachian State and Wofford were upset victims.  The Mountaineers lost to Georgia Southern (38-35) and the Terriers lost to Elon (24-13).  Here are the complete rankings through games played on October 20.

Southern Illinois' stay at No. 1 didn't last long as the Salukis lost at Northern Iowa (30-24) on Saturday.  The Panthers jumped out to a 20-7 halftime lead behind QB Eric Sanders and then had to hang on as the Salukis moved the ball all the way to the UNI 3 before time ran out.  The loss by SIU allowed North Dakota State to retake the No. 1 spot after an easy 58-7 win at Mississippi Valley State, while the Panthers move up to No. 2.  Southern Illinois drops to No. 3.  Here are the complete ranking through games played on October 13.

Week 4: Appalachian State Falls

Appalachian State was good enough to beat Michigan in Week 1, but wasn't good enough to beat Wofford on Saturday as the Terriers ended the Mountaineers 17-game winning streak in a 42-31 win.  Wofford took advantage of three Appalachian State turnovers and held their vaunted rushing attack to just 98 yards through the first three quarters.  The loss knocked the Mountaineers from the top spot and allowed North Dakota State to become the new No. 1 after a 44-14 win over Division I-A Central Michigan.  The Bison handed the Chipewas their worst home loss since 2001.  Here are the complete ranking through games played on September 22.

Week 3: Nothing New For New Hampshire

New Hampshire became the latest Division 1-AA team to knock off a Division 1-A opponent when the Wildcats beat Marshall 48-35 on Saturday.  But that's nothing new for New Hampshire as it was the third straight win over a 1-A opponent after beating Rutgers in 2004 and Northwestern last season.  QB Ricky Santos led the way for NH with 3 TD passes and another on the ground as the Wildcats bounced back from an opening-day loss to James Madison to move up to No. 6 in this week's Index.   Here are the complete ranking through games played on September 15.

Week 2: Panthers On The Prowl

It may not have gotten as much publicity at the Appalachian State-Michigan upset, but Northern Iowa showed it could take on a Division IA team when the Panthers beat Iowa State (24-13) on Saturday.  In front of the largest crowd ever at ISU (56,795), Northern Iowa forced four Cyclone turnovers and relied on the passing of QB Eric Sanders (23-of-29; 2 TD passes) to snap a five-game losing streak to Iowa State.  The win pushed Northern Iowa to No. 2 in this week's Index just ahead of James Madison, which rebounded from its loss to North Carolina with a 17-point win over New Hampshire (41-24).   Here are the complete ranking through games played on September 8.

Week 1: Mountaineers Shock Michigan

Two-time defending champion Appalachian State showed no intimidation going into the Big House as the Mountaineers pulled off the upset of Week 1 with a 34-32 win at Michigan.  The team from Boone, NC, took the lead on a Julian Rauch 24-yard FG with 26 seconds left and then preserved the victory when Corey Lynch blocked the Wolverines' game-winning try from 37 yards out.  The Mountaineers became the first Division I-AA team to beat a I-A team that was ranked in the AP Poll and allowed them to easily hold onto the top spot in this year's first Index.  Here are the complete ranking through games played on September 1.
