Heat Ride Wade To 1st NBA Title

The Miami Heat, which finished with just the fifth best Dunkel rating during the regular season, put together a strong run in the playoffs capped by four straight wins over Dallas to claim the first championship in the franchise's history.  Relying on series MVP Dwyane Wade, the Heat overcame an 0-2 deficit and gave head coach Pat Riley his fifth NBA title.  No. 2 Dallas had looked brilliant in knocking off defending champion San Antonio in the Western Conference semis and then cruising past Phoenix into the finals.  But after blowing a late lead in Game 3 against Miami, the Mavs never recovered.  Here are the final Dunkel rankings* for the 2005-06 NBA season.

Spurs Outlast Pistons For Third Title

Detroit had won 10 straight post-season games with a chance to eliminate its opponent, but that string came to an end as San Antonio prevailed in Game 7 of the NBA Finals to win its third championship in seven years.  The Spurs looked like they were going to roll to another title after winning the first two games at home in convincing fashion.  But Detroit responded with two blowout wins in Games 3 and 4 setting the stage for the last three games, which all went down to the wire.  Tim Duncan won his third MVP of the Finals despite struggling in Games 5 and 6.  The big man responded with 25 points and 11 rebounds in the Spurs' 81-74 win in Game 7.  In winning the title, San Antonio showed they deserved the top Dunkel rating during the regular season (120.9) and improved that mark 3.4 points by defeating Denver, Seattle, Phoenix and Detroit along the way.  Detroit once again made a strong move in the playoffs, jumping four spaces to No. 2 with series wins over Philadelphia, Indiana and Miami.  Here are the final NBA rankings for the 2004-05 season.

Playoff Run Vaults Pistons To No. 1

By winning their first championship in 14 years, the Detroit Pistons moved from No. 3 to No. 1 in the final Dunkel Index ratings for the 2003-04 season.  The Pistons entered the post-season the highest-rated team in Eastern Conference according to Dunkel and did not disappoint in the playoffs, going 16-7 and finishing off the Lakers in five games in the finals.  Detroit improved its Dunkel rating from 119.3 at the end of the regular season to 123.6 at the conclusion of the finals.  The jump of 4.3 ratings points was second only to Sacramento's increase (4.6 points).  The biggest drop was registered by San Antonio.  The Spurs finished the regular season No. 1 in the Index with a rating of 123.5, but dropped to 118.1 after losing to L.A. in the second round.  Here are the complete ratings including the playoffs.  As a reminder, the ratings reflect how teams were playing at the end of their seasons and thus are not entirely cumulative.
